Final Grade Calculator
The score you need on your final exam to finish the course with the grade you want.
Enter your current grade, how much the final counts, and the grade you want.
How this calculator works
Your course grade is a weighted average of two parts: everything so far, and the final. If the final is worth 25%, everything else is worth the other 75%.
So the grade you want equals your current grade times 75%, plus your final score times 25%. Rearranged, that tells you the final score you need.
Two answers deserve plain words rather than an odd number. If you would need more than 100%, the target is out of reach without extra credit. If you would need 0% or less, you already have it, whatever happens on the final.
The calculator also shows what each common target would need, and what each final score would leave you with — useful for seeing how much room you have either way.
The formula
Exactly what happens to your numbers, step by step.
Course grade
grade = current × (1 − w) + final × ww is the final’s weight: 25% is 0.25.
Score needed
final needed = (target − current × (1 − w)) ÷ w
A worked example
You have 84% going into a final worth 25%, and you want to finish with 85%.
What you enter
- Current grade
- 84%
- Final exam weight
- 25%
- Grade you want
- 85%
Step by step
- Everything else counts for
- 75%
- Your current grade contributes
- 84 × 0.75 = 63
- The final must contribute
- 85 − 63 = 22
- So the final needs
- 22 ÷ 0.25 = 88
You need 88% on the final
With a perfect 100% the course would finish at 88%, and with 0% it would fall to 63% — the whole range the final can move you across.
Assumptions
Every result here rests on these. Change your inputs and the result changes with them.
- Your current grade is your grade on everything except the final, as a percentage.
- The final counts as one weighted part of the course grade, as most syllabi describe it.
What this cannot tell you
- Some courses drop the lowest score, let the final replace an earlier exam, or require a minimum score on the final itself. Those rules change the arithmetic, and this does not know them.
- Letter-grade cutoffs differ between schools and courses, so results are in percentages.
Questions people ask
What if I need more than 100% on the final?
Then the target is out of reach on the final alone. Even a perfect score leaves you short. Extra credit, a regrade, or a different target are the options — the calculator shows the best grade still possible.
How do I find out how much my final is worth?
Your syllabus usually lists the weight of each part of the grade. If it gives points instead of percentages, divide the final’s points by the total points in the course.
What if my grade is already high enough?
If the score needed is 0% or less, the target is secured whatever happens on the final. It is still worth checking whether your course sets a minimum score on the final itself.
How much will my final exam affect my grade?
By its weight. If the final is worth 20%, every 10 points you score on it moves your course grade by 2 points. Going in with 85%, a 100 on the final lifts you to 88%, a 90 gives you 86%, and a 70 drops you to 82%. This assumes your current grade covers everything except the final, so check your syllabus for how the course is weighted.
